Dermaplaning

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure that requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently exfoliate the skin’s surface to remove the top-most layer of dead skin cells along with fine, vellus hair (aka peach fuzz).

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Physical exfoliation triggers the cell regeneration process and allows products to better penetrate skin. Some practitioners perform a chemical peel post-dermaplaning. Dermaplaning is also excellent to rid the face of excess fine hairs which can often accumulate dirt and oil. Contrary to popular belief, vellus hairs will NOT grow back thicker or darker. However, dermaplaning is not suitable for those with excessive facial hair (see below). Microdermabrasion, which also physically exfoliates skin, does not remove vellus hair. Exfoliation of dead cells along with the removal of fine hairs results in healthier, brighter skin that has a smoother look and feel.

Who should consider Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is especially effective on those with dry or rough skin texture and helps to minimize superficial acne scarring or uneven skin tone. It is also beneficial for mature skin, which tends to have a buildup of dead cells as cellular turnover slows down with age. Dermaplaning is safe for pregnant or lactating clients who cannot have chemical peels (peels penetrate skin to act at the cellular level, thus are contraindicated)

Dermaplaning, unlike traditional shaving, uses a smaller blade to slough off dead skin cells in addition to removing wispy facial hair, so skin is more even in tone and texture. It’s superficial (there will not be blood) and strangely reminiscent of a cat lick (tickly, sandpapery). It makes makeup go on smoother, too.

Dermaplaning is a procedure for exfoliating the outer most layer of skin and ridding it of fine hair we tend to call peach fuzz. It’s a quick service that’s generally performed on the face. A trained and medically supervised Esthetician uses a scalpel and a soft touch, scraping the surface of the skin using light feathery strokes.

Why Get It?

Dermaplaning not only gets rid of peach fuzz on the face, it also exfoliates removing dead skin cells on the outermost layer.

It’s a great option for those who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin because of adverse reactions. This might be because of a medical condition or being pregnant or nursing.
